PETALING JAYA: There will be no supply cuts to domestic consumers with electricity bills in arrears of less than six months until June 30, said energy and natural resources minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.
“Taking into account the need to continue helping the rakyat during the movement control order (MCO), the government, in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), will ensure that no electricity supply cuts are implemented in homes with arrears not exceeding six months until June 30,” he said in a statement.
He added that domestic consumers have also been offered the Easy Payment Plan (EPP) from Jan 1 to June 30 to help them manage their electricity bills.
The six-month programme has since been extended to Dec 31, and Shamsul said the initiative would help reduce the cost of living following the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
“It is estimated that 6.96 million domestic consumers in the peninsula will benefit from this initiative, and it is hoped that this programme will help preserve the well-being of the people during the current challenging economic situation,” he said.
Under the Bantuan Prihatin Elektrik (BPE) scheme, all domestic consumers in Peninsular Malaysia received a one-off discount of up to RM77 per month, or RM231 for three months, during last year’s MCO.
